That’s right, it’s time to break out your ugly jumpers and grab your ice skates as the City Renewal Authority’s Winter in the City festival takes over Civic Square from Friday 1 to Sunday 17 July.

And with plenty to see, do, eat and drink (hello ice-skating and mulled wine bars), we’ve found all of the wintry things you need to put on your ‘to-do’ list to celebrate. And yes, hot chocolates are a must. Duh.

Lace-up your skates, our beloved outdoor ice-skating rink is back to bring winter charm to the city! Opening from Friday 1 to Sunday 17 July, you can hit the ice with the whole family from 10 am every day and live out your Blades of Glory dreams.

Perfect for some school holiday fun or the opportunity to fall head over skates on a romantic wintry date, you’ll also have the chance to enjoy ice sculptures or warm up by fireplaces with a delicious hot chocolate.

And don’t worry if you don’t have your own skates–your ice rink ticket includes the option to pick up a pair of rental skates so you can make the most of your session.

Bookings are essential so get in quick!

Friday 1 – Sunday 17 July | 10 am – 8 pm Monday to Thursday and 10 am – 9 pm Friday to Sunday | Tickets here.

Perfect for warming up your fingers after a day on the ice, The Canberra Theatre Centre’s Winter Drink Bar is serving up the ultimate winter drink: mulled wine.

Add in the chance to catch Amy Shark live on Thursday 7 and Friday 8 July, join a giggle fest at the Comedy Festival Road Show (Saturday 9 July); catch up with friends before catching Friends the Musical Parody (Wednesday 13 to Saturday 16 July); or enjoy Urinetown the Musical (Thursday 14- Sunday 24 July) and popping into the pop-up bar never sounded so good.

Until Sunday 17 July | 4 pm – 8 pm Monday to Thursday and 4 pm – 9 pm Friday and Saturday | Civic Square, London Circuit, Canberra

A warm brownie with your choice of gelato AND a coffee? Sign us up! Get excited foodies, Winter in the City is bringing the best winter weather food offerings to fill your stomach and warm your soul.

Until Sunday 17 July, head to Gelatissimo for a $9 gelato, brownie and coffee combo or make a stop at Little Green Bean for a Turkish coffee and a free pistachio or rose water Turkish Delight! But if you’re looking for the opportunity to super-size your favourite hot drink, with any jumbo-sized coffee Little Green Bean is giving away a free French Macaron.

Don’t worry if bubble tea is more your vibe, SuperEmoji also has a special winter offering: two special drinks for just $5.80. Choose from the Bubble Lover Milk Tea (with brown sugar bubble) or the Strawberry Crystal Green Tea (with sago and coconut jelly).

Want something more filling? Edo Tori is offering a limited winter dish—a Japanese hot pot pairing with warm Dassai Sake, the perfect match for a Canberra winters day. Foodie adventure anyone?

Until Sunday 17 July | Various location

Did someone say mulled wine and s’mores in the ultimate winter wonderland? That’s right, we’re talking about the alpine fairy-towns of Switzerland–and the best part is you don’t even need your passport.

If you’re planning to visit the Canberra Centre this July (and why wouldn’t you?) you need to make a stop at their Winter Village. With a variety of workshops, a Swiss VR experience, a snow machine, mulled wine and s’mores pop-up bars, you’ll be transported from the Canberra cold into the magic of a cosy alpine village thanks to My Switzerland.

If that’s not enough to make you want to pack a bag and head out on a Swiss-themed day trip, you’ll also have the chance to win an ultimate Swiss Holiday for two. See you there?

What’s better than a party? How about an ‘80s themed street party with art, local beer, wine, cocktails and (of course) a DeLorean.

Inspired by Back to the Boombox (a quirky exhibition of a private collection of boomboxes, owned by Canberra local, Kinloch Kilby) Canberra Museum and Gallery (CMAG) is hosting the ultimate winter shindig to help you get your frosty feet moving.

Along with live music and performances, you can enjoy immersive installations, hip-hop dance battles hosted by Project Beats, DJs, and after-hours glimpses at CMAG’s gallery spaces.

The ultimate tribute to how the boombox took music to the streets in a way never before seen, it’s the perfect winter warmer. And don’t forget to take to the streets yourself to enjoy some illuminating light installations.

Friday 8 July, 7 pm – 11 pm | Civic Square, 180 London Cct, Canberra | Entry is free but bookings are essential | Tickets here.

If you’d rather escape the city streets, Canberra’s iconic institutions are hosting some cool events throughout Winter in the City.

Head to CMAG, the Canberra Theatre Centre, ACT Libraries (at various locations) and Craft ACT for the perfect school holiday entertainment (for kids big and small) and make sure to grab a hot coffee or some soup from their cafes before you spend a day exploring.
